Robin Garden Visitor

Robin

Look at this little Robin. When I was out gardening on Sunday he was with me all the time.
He flew down about fifteen minutes after I started clearing away some branches and sat on the fence for awhile.

Then after hubby had done some digging and I was lightly raking over the soil and clearing weeds, he came right down onto the soil about a foot away from me.
I was crouched down at the time clearing around a shrub and stayed very still and he hopped around finding food coming up really close to me. I could have easily reached out and touched him.

He was so pretty with his red markings. I dare not move for fear of startling him. He knew I was there and this little bird looked straight at me curious but not frightened. I was totally in awe of being so very close to this little wild bird.
Robin

However, I needn't have worried as when I did finally have to move ( I was getting cramp!) he just stayed very calm and sat there looking at me.
I think he knew he was onto a very good thing if these people were digging and raking the soil revealing food!

He is a courageous little robin and I think he is here to stay!

Hubby managed to go grab our camera and take these photographs of him.

I am sure so many of you have seen Robins this close, they are well known in many gardens,  but it was a special moment for me.
I love having bird visitors and this was just a lovely experience. A special moment in time with the wildlife in our garden.

I Love Autumn, Nature And Memories

I Love Autumn- Nature And The Memories

Pumpkin

Reasons To Love Autumn/Fall

This post is a little look back on Autumn's past and why I love the season. You will see Autumn photographs, gift ideas, poetry and memories. I hope you enjoy it.

Autumn or Fall is a gorgeous time of year. Nature gives us a spectacular show of colour and richness to enjoy before we are plunged into winter.

Yes, the days get shorter and colder but some of my favourite colours appear in Autumn. Cosy sweaters, hats and gloves start to be worn and out come the richly scented candles evocative of spices, warmth and comfort.

We have a wonderful harvest and the benefit of reaping what we have sown earlier. Often beautiful sunsets and sunrises occur and we can watch nature as the year ripens. Wonderful childhood memories come flooding back to me of walking through deep layers of richly coloured leaves and learning about all the trees.

All in all Yes I love Autumn !

You may like to listen to this beautiful music as you look through the rest of the page. A beautiful piece of music from one of my favourite composers :)

Lovely Autumn /Fall scene. I just like this photograph of nature turning into Autumn/Fall

Our Autumn Wedding and Anniversary!

One of my best memories has to be our Wedding day. We got married in the autumn, at the end of September.

I confess to being a little worried about the weather all those years ago, but it was lovely. Before our Wedding it rained heavily but on Friday things started to brighten up and the actual day was glorious! I am so happy and grateful for our beautiful Autumn Wedding and the wonderful memories we have.

The weather was beautiful, clear warm but not too hot, sunny and bright and with a stunning backdrop of autumn colours! The photographer was ecstatic as he said although most people like summer weddings the light is so much better in the autumn. He took some rich and glorious photographs for us we treasure.

Even after 20 years we still celebrate our anniversary. It is a special day for us and that is something I love about Autumn :)

To Autumn-John Keats

John Keats - To Autumn

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,

And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells.
Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?

Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
Or on a half-reap'd furrow sound asleep,

Drows'd with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers:
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook;

Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,
Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.
Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too, -

While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
And touch the stubble plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river sallows, borne aloft

Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

Golden Retriever Birthday!

It was our Goldies Birthday in Sept so each year we had a birthday for him. Treats and dog cake and lots of pressies of course! Yes we are crazy but he was our little man in a golden suit. I still remember his birthday even now he has passed.

Goldie loved Autumn. Summer was usually too muggy for him with his big furry coat, but in the Autumn he could run and play without getting too hot and best of all jump in MUD!! Camouflage himself in the autumn colours of the fallen leaves and roll in them! Autumn was Fun!

Fall Foliage - Beautiful nature scenes of fall.

Autumn holidays

We quite often have taken our annual holiday in the Autumn. It is great when everyone else seems to be going back to work to have a couple of weeks off.If going abroad to sunnier climes the fares and accommodation have often been less expensive than the summer yet still good weather.

If holidaying in Britain again the cottages are less expensive, certainly less crowded and we have usually had wonderful clear crisp sunny days ideal for long country walks in the fields and forests and along the beaches and cliffs and warm cosy nights by the fire reading or watching a great film all safe and peaceful and cosy.

Usually at sometime during October or late September the dogs not allowed ban on the beaches where in force is often lifted and we could enjoy playing with Goldie on the beach! Bracing winds often.... oh Yes... but great fun!

Fun For Children In Autumn

Children can enjoy every season. I have such happy memories as a child of autumn.

I loved it when my mum and dad took me into the woods near us and we chose leaves and made works of art from them. I loved walking through deep piles of leaves wrapped up in big sweaters and scarf identifying all the different trees and leaves.

Out in the fresh air enjoying nature running free and having fun! What could be better. I still love being out in nature in the autumn today !

We went for a lovely sunny Autumn walk and the leaves were deeply stacked up in places and very crunchy as you walked through them. Reminded me of hours of fun when I was a child! I still love wading through leaves now :)

Teach Children About Autumn/Fall

Personally I think it is essential to teach children all about nature and the different seasons. I will never forget the times as a child walking through red, yellow and bronze autumn leaves with my Mum, playing and learning.

Then choosing a few really spectacular leaves to take home and press. Together we learned about which trees they came from and why the leaves turned all these amazing colours.
I was learning so much and having fun with my Mum. These memories are more treasured than ever now she is gone.

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower."

Albert Camus

Autumn Gardening

Although it is a little sad to see the summer flowers fading it is good to clear the way for the autumn bulbs and to give the changing leaf colour, center stage for a short while before we go into winter.

I enjoy the autumn tasks, gathering leaves, autumn pruning, planting and all the while appreciating the glorious colours all around.

I attempt to make my garden look as good in Autumn as it did in summer and while I don't think I have quite achieved that yet I do enjoy trying!

I don't have many memories but my elder siblings do. Actually when I was a kid I never could relate to months and seasons, and by the time I really started to care for seasons, the whole thing kind of got disturbed. No more peak summers in June and timely rains in July.. Only if I had paid more attention back then.. ;)

Wild Birds Visiting Our Garden

Bird Boxes In Garden

Birds Visiting Our Garden

I Love birds, feeding them, watching them and we have quite a few regulars to our garden. Our garden birds helped me so much when I had severe back and sciatic pain. When I could do nothing else and barely move out of my home, I could watch them out of the window and laugh at their antics and marvel at their beauty.

Here are some of our bird visitors. Please note that my priority is always not to disturb the birds so for this I do sometimes sacrifice photo quality. Please do not copy the photos without my permission.

I have included some videos here not taken by us but which are very lovely too, I hope you like them.

Bird on fence

Our Garden And Our Birds

When we first moved into our home, the garden was not much to speak of. It was of moderate size and just grass. It did have a mixed hedge at the bottom of the garden.

The previous owners had used pesticides and slug pellets etc to keep insects and pests away from their flowers in pots.

The garden seemed a bit too quiet for our liking so the first thing we did was to plant some nature-friendly shrubs and get rid of any trace of pellets etc. We have never used pesticides but were aware that it could take years for a garden to recover from that usage.

We planted shrubs and flowers that would attract insects, butterflies, etc and also piled up some logs to rot away so a good home for many bugs.

We planted dense growing shrubs that would eventually, be great nesting places and shelter from cold winds and snow for the birds.

We started feeding the birds every Autumn and Winter and provided a birdbath for their use.

Eventually, we were rewarded with more wildlife coming into our garden. That was a wonderful thing to have to happen.

Bird Feeder-For Birds Only!

It is lovely to feed the birds,. However, you may also unintentionally be feeding other wildlife as well!

One of the animals who like to visit bird feeders are squirrels. While it is magic to watch their antics you may find the food disappears very fast. So you might for at least some of your bird feeders get one that is as squirrel proof as possible.

I would personally be surprised if any bird feeder deters squirrels completely but this one does a good job.

 Feeding Birds On The Ground

Some birds like Woodpigeons will find it difficult or impossible to feed out of feeders so I always put some seed on the ground they can take advantage of.

We have two pairs of woodpigeons who visit our garden regularly now.

A bird does not sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song."
Chinese Proverb

Bird Tracks

Loved finding these bird tracks one very cold snowy morning!I thought this was an amazing sight to greet me one frosty morning.

 I had no idea that the birds came so close to our house or that there were so very many tracks all over our garden.

Bird Nest Boxes.

If you love birds in your garden it is a good idea to put up a few nest boxes for them. You can buy many different types for different species of birds from the very tiny right up to Owls.

Here is a fairly standard nest box easy to site in any garden.
When siting a nest box do make sure that it is not sitting in the full sun all day as this could kill baby birds as they will overheat.

It should be best positioned in at least partial shade with some natural covering and away from easy access of cats.

Wooden Bluebird House

Bird In The Bath.

I love this photo greeting card of a bird having a really good time in our birdbath.

You can customise this card for a loved one with your own special message.

 I do think having a birdbath in every garden is just as, if not more than important than feeding the birds.

Our birdbath is used every day by a wide range of birds from sparrows to blackbirds to wood pigeons.

It is vital to keep it clean and well filled up as once the birds get used to it they will come often to drink and bathe.

When the snow is deep there is no way the birds can make use of the birdbath. So every day in the freezing weather my Husband or I would go out clear it and put in fresh water.

It was quite a task as it was snowing heavily and freezing deeply but at least we knew for a while the birds could get fresh water and do a little bathing - if they wanted to!

Whitehall Products Oak Leaf Suet Feeder, Oil Rub Bronze.

Here is a very nice looking bird feeder in bronze. It will look lovely in any garden and help to keep the birds well fed.

It is good to have a variety of bird feeders. Mine vary from very standard ones to ones that are more beautiful to look at.

The birds really do not care! However, it all depends on how you wish your garden to look.

For me, the bird feeders form part of the look of the garden as well as being useful. So I put the more nice-looking ones where they will be on show more.

Our Wood Pigeons.

We have regular wood pigeons. These wood pigeons are very bold and look me right in the eye when I look at them.

I guess they know by now that I will not hurt them in any way. They are regular visitors to the birdbath and then spend ages walking around the garden.

Bird Feeders To Buy - Enjoy watching the birds as they feed

Lovely bird feeder you can fix to your window.

These types of feeders are great to keep the birds well fed and healthier and also give you the opportunity to watch them at your leisure.

Over time if you are patient and quiet you may be able to get quite close to the window to observe them feeding. Often nice for children to watch birds via one of these feeders.
